We recommend this product. We were pleasantly surprised when we turned on the radio, and the sound was quite clear. In addition, the CDs sound awesome.
Before I bought this item, I read the pro and con reviews which were very helpful and helped me decide to make the purchase; I made sure I used an outlet that didn't share with a major appliance, so radio reception is great. I have really been enjoying this equipment. (there's always one on everybody's microwave and kitchen stove and how many does one need). I didn't think it really needed a clock and timer. The I-Pod pocket and connection make this player outstanding. (my favorite feature); plus the fact that it will play 3 CD's.
Almost from the beginning, the CD's would skip. I called Sony and even though the limited warranty that came with my machine says there is a one year warranty on parts and labor.
Sony even went so far as to insinuate that mine was a refurbished, used machine with false documentation as she said that if it were a "real" Sony limited warranty card, it would have code numbers in the right hand corner. Sony will not honor it, claiming that there is only 90 days on labor.
I bought this unit last fall to be able to have music in the kitchen of our summer cabin. This spring I brought original CD's, even brand new ones, they still skip.
I am very disappointed and would give it no stars if that option was available. We don't get any radio reception and I was especially interested in the small, off-the-counter CD player.
Since I had brought only "burned" CD's to the cabin, I thought maybe it just didn't do well with "burned" CD's.
I decided to check Amazon and not only did they have it, but I saved $50. Then we found this one a the a store, loved it, but they were all out. Also I used super shopper free shipping and had it in only 4 buisness days, cann't ask for anything better. We spent over a month going to every store immaginable looking for a under cabinet stereo we liked. They were all poor sounding and poorly made or really expensive with a tv or dvd which we didn't want.
Its not. If you are going to put this under a single wide cabinet (16" wide) which is up against a wall on left (or right for that matter), and/or you have under cabinet lights, think about placement (not unique to this machine). This unit excels at the items which are second on my list, and fails at the most important. The FM radio does little better than the GE under cabinet it replaced for. This is a strong urban station, but we must be in some sort of odd shadow. (20 seconds for #3 to #1 for those who care) I do not have an MP3 player, but the little bracket for it is cute and would be used, don't know why they did not add one for the remote. The unit is pretty big, and I recall I had to mount it with some imagination. (boy that capacitor probably would have cost Sony manufacturing a whole cent a piece. That would be OK if device were designed to be tuned manually.
CD player is fine, although it takes forever to switch from one CD to another. We are entering the summer season when power interruptions go from one per season to one per month or worse. What this unit does well: better sound (but not better than living room hi-fi rig).
Fussing with power cable position is entertaining for bystanders but not particularly effective. But the worse disappointment was to discover that the radio does not retain its settings even after the briefest power glitch. Not here in Boston.
It has trouble consistently receiving the station I listen to most. Its the old lab-rat peck peck peck on tuning buttons for your reward routine. The power must be more reliable where the engineers live who designed this.
Just remember there are controls not only on front, but on both sides as well, so you can not mount it flush with right or left wall. Unfortunately the poor reception comes and goes, and changes with my body position next to the sink (try washing dishes without moving).
I'm not sure I could afford that).
